Four small pieces turning one question over in the light: whether anything is ever new, or only newly seen. Nothing under the sun, the old verse says, and then a child arrives, and you watch your wife become a mother and meet her again as if for the first time, and the whole tired world comes up gleaming. These took shape on paper and at the piano both, my first written down rather than only found under the hands. They open by suggesting nothing ever changes and close by confessing that everything can, the moment the one who listens has moved.

The debut of ‘Old Composers With New Hats,’ a project where I reinterpret classical pieces into a present day musical context, 'June' offers a lighthearted musical commentary inspired by a movement from Tchaikovsky’s 'The Seasons' Op. 37a, a collection of twelve character pieces.

Into My Heart
‘Into My Heart’ emerged spontaneously during a solo recording session, unplanned and unexpected. Initially booked for a classical recording, I found myself drawn to improvise on a melody that had been echoing in my mind. What began as an impromptu exploration soon evolved into a rendition of an old church hymn. This recording captures a deeply personal aspect of my musical expression, akin to the intimate moments I experience when playing alone.

Fragile. Break easily. Yet create a palpable sense of separation between the inside and outside, the outside and inside. Acting as a lens offering the illusion of safety. A portal through which the world is observed, similar to the way humanity observes human behavior through the lens of a book.

Contemplations
‘Contemplations’ started out of an impulse to document my morning meditations through my playing. The first piece was recorded on October 2nd, 2022. Eleven days later the project felt complete, with a total of 12 tracks. All tracks were improvised in one take, imperfect, yet serving the purpose of documenting a process. Start where you are, with what you have.
